# When prayer feels hard or empty

Prayer can feel empty for long stretches. You can stay honest and use borrowed words when your own words will not come.

Begin here

Reduce the practice to one psalm, one sentence, or two minutes of silence. Tell God what the difficulty is and let that truth become the prayer.

## Use the smallest honest prayer

1. Name the reason prayer feels hard today.
2. Borrow one line from a psalm or use, “God, I am still here.”
3. Ask one person to hold you in prayer this week.

## Doubt can be spoken in God's presence

Questions do not need to wait outside prayer. Say what you cannot believe, what disappoints you, and what you wish were different.

The Psalms contain protest, confusion, and long waits. Your prayer can too.

## Borrow the faith of a community

A church service, a familiar liturgy, or one trusted friend can carry words when you have none.

You do not have to produce a feeling to take part. Showing up may be the whole practice for now.

## A prayer you can use

God, prayer is hard today.

God, I am here with my doubts and empty words.

Hold me through this dry place and let other people carry hope when I cannot.

Amen.

## Questions people ask

Have I lost my faith if prayer feels empty?

No. Feelings change, and many faithful Christians describe long periods of dryness.

Should I stop praying for a while?

You can rest and simplify. Keep one small point of connection and speak with someone wise if the struggle continues.

Why does prayer sometimes feel difficult?

Stress, grief, doubt, tiredness, and disappointment can all make prayer hard. Difficulty does not mean you have failed or that God has left.

What can I say when I do not want to pray?

Start with the truth: 'God, I do not want to pray today.' One honest sentence is a real beginning.

Should I keep praying when I feel nothing?

You can keep the practice small and steady without forcing an emotion. Use a Psalm, silence, or the support of another person.

Can doubt be part of prayer?

Yes. Bring the question itself to God. Honest doubt is better than words that hide what you really think and feel.
