# Help children learn to pray

Children learn prayer by joining in, asking questions, and hearing adults use normal words. Keep the practice concrete and brief.

Begin here

Ask what the child wants to thank God for and who needs help. Let them speak, draw, move, or stay quiet. End while the moment still feels good.

## Use hands as a prayer map

1. Thumb: pray for people close to us.
2. First finger: pray for teachers and guides.
3. Middle finger: pray for leaders and the wider world.
4. Ring and little fingers: pray for people who need help and for ourselves.

## Match the practice to the child's age

Young children may use pictures, objects, or one repeated phrase. Older children can write, choose a news story, or lead part of the prayer.

A child's question about God deserves an honest answer, including “I don't know.”

## Protect children from spiritual pressure

Do not ask a child to produce a sign, special message, or public confession. Never promise that a prayer will force a particular result.

Adults remain responsible for safety, health care, and safeguarding action.

## A prayer you can use

God, thank you for hearing children.

Help us speak honestly, listen carefully, and care for people who need help.

Teach us to trust you and to ask good questions.

Amen.

## Questions people ask

What if a child says something silly?

Stay warm. Gentle humour is fine, but do not shame them. Guide the group back when needed.

Should children memorise prayers?

Familiar prayers can give useful words. Make room for their own words and silence as well.

How do I teach a child to pray?

Model short, honest prayer and let the child use their own words. Show that thanks, requests, questions, and silence all belong.

How long should children pray?

Keep it suitable for their age and attention. One or two minutes can be enough for a young child.

What if a child does not want to pray?

Do not force them. Let them listen, draw, or name something they are thankful for, and offer another chance later.

How can prayer help an anxious child?

Prayer can give a child words for fear and remind them that adults are listening. It must not replace comfort, practical safety, or professional help when needed.
